For many children, going from door to door at Halloween is one of the highlights of the autumn. For parents, it can feel like a puzzle of costumes, torches, sweets and tired legs. A little planning in the days before makes the evening calmer and lets everyone enjoy it, including the grown-ups walking behind.
Planning the route and the costumes
Start by choosing a route together. Stick to streets you know, ideally where neighbours are used to visitors, and agree roughly how long you will be out. A short loop with a clear starting and finishing point works better than a long wander. Look out for houses with a lit pumpkin or a decoration, which usually means visitors are welcome, and skip the ones that are dark.
Costumes should be warm and comfortable first, and impressive second. Children walk further than they expect, and a heavy mask or a long cloak can quickly become a nuisance. Make sure the outfit lets them see clearly and move easily, and put a jumper or a coat underneath. A small torch or a glow stick helps everyone spot the children in the dark, and comfortable shoes matter more than they seem to before setting out.
Agree on a few simple habits before leaving. Children stay with the group, knock politely, say thank you at every door and never go inside a house. Let the youngest hold an adult's hand near the road. Give each child a bag or bucket of their own, and decide in advance whether the sweets are shared at the end of the evening or sorted at home the next day.
When you get back, take a little time to calm down. A warm drink and a look through the haul make a nice ending. Decide with the children how much will be eaten that night, and put the rest away somewhere safe. If they are still buzzing, a quiet story or a short film helps them wind down before bed. And if some houses did not open the door, remind them that everyone celebrates in their own way.
Afterwards, ask what they enjoyed most, and take a photograph of the costumes if you like. Next year, the same route and the same box of dressing-up things will make everything even easier.
