Remembering the PE kit for school

Few things cause more last-minute panic than a missing PE kit. It is under the bed, in the wash, or still in last week's bag, and the school run is already in full swing. A simple routine, repeated every week, is usually enough to stop the problem before it starts.

A weekly routine for the kit

Begin with one fixed place for the kit at home. A hook by the door or a labelled bag on the stairs works well, as long as it is always the same spot. When the kit comes home, it goes straight into the wash, and when it is dry, it goes straight back to the fixed place. Children who see the same steps each week soon do them without being asked.

Write the timetable where the whole family can see it. A note on the fridge saying which days the children need kit, trainers or swimming things saves many arguments. Some families tick off the items in the evening: shorts, T-shirt, socks, trainers and water bottle. A quick check the night before takes a minute and makes the morning much smoother.

Label everything with the child's name, especially socks, trainers and jumpers. Kit that looks the same as everyone else's disappears quickly in a changing room. A spare pair of socks in the bag is always worth having. Ask the child to put the kit back in the bag after PE, so that nothing is left behind on a peg at school.

If the kit is forgotten anyway, stay calm. Shouting on the doorstep will not bring it back, and the child arrives at school upset. Explain to the teacher, if you can, or let the child do so, and talk about a plan for next time. Children learn faster from a calm chat than from a telling-off.

Praise the weeks when everything goes smoothly, so that the good habit gets noticed. Over time, the child will start to remind you, and the kit will become just another part of the weekly rhythm, as ordinary as packing a lunch or finding a coat.
